New achievement of the Institute of Botany

The first phase of the project “Development of methods for the maintenance of plant diversity in the Caucasus”, which realized by Volkswagen Foundation during 2011-2015 within the framework of MoU of cooperation between ANAS Institute of Botany, Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum (BBBM, Germany), was completed.

Project has played a significant role in progress of the institute and strengthening the international ties. Within the project, reconstruction works have been launched in the institute and then completed in the Foundation by support of ANAS. Young specialists and PhD students of the aforementioned institute have educated at BBBM on modern spheres of biology such as molecular systematic, genetics protection, informatics of biodiversity and carried out studies on the determination of the status of some relic rare and endangered tree species (Zelkova, Gleditsia, Pterocarya etc.), as well as published articles joint with German scientists in journals with impact factor.

In addition, in May-February 2015, Institute organized exhibition dubbed “Plant diversity between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea”, reflecting scientific outputs obtained over BBBM project, including history, culture and nature of the Caucasus, and commissioned by European visitors.

Results of the first phase of the project highly appraised by Volkswagen Foundation and were decided to conduct second phase due to continue studies in 2016.
