In the territory of the Eastern Azerbaijan - there are 400  mud volcanoes and their manifestations onshore and offshore areas of the Caspian. As a result of tectonic activity of the volcanoes on the earth surface fluid and breccias are move out. Besides, in a dormant period of volcanoes, gas, the mineralized water, oozy dirt are extracted from big depths on a surface and in certain cases even large number of oil moves out. As a result, on surroundings of the volcano are formed extraordinary solonchak lands, unique from the geochemical point of view of landscape, which has a negative impact on environment and alive organisms.

For a long time at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS carried out studies of mud volcanoes with different aspects. But, scientific-research works due to volcanic activity and evaluation of geo-environmental risk was not been given enough attention. Implementation of these studies is possible with the acquisition of new relevant instruments and equipment, as well as the implementation of field works.

In this regard, established research group of for Young Scientists and Specialists of Institutes of Geology and Geophysics and Radiation Problems by the organizational support of Science Development Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for conducting research in new fields within the project "Assessment of geo-environmental risk in the process of activities of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan"(III grant competition for young scientists and specialists (EIF / GAM-3-2014-6 (21)).

According to the project manager, senior researcher at the Department of mud volcanism of IGG, PhD in Earth Science Orkhan Abbasov, the project studies started from the beginning of January this year. Deadline of research work costing 50,000 AZN will be completed in January 2017.
